CCZ Youth Day Message Featured

12th March 2021

Lusaka.

The Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) wishes to join the rest of the country in commemorating this year’s Youth Day which is being held under the theme, ‘‘Enhancing National Development Through Sustainable Youth Partnership.’’

Youths make up a larger percentage of our population and this means that the future of Zambia lies in the hands of our young people. It is for this reason that it becomes vital to incorporate Youths in national development.

As CCZ, we want to underscore the fact that there can never be any for

m of development in a country embroiled in political violence spearheaded by selfish politicians who take advantage of jobless young people who are ready to shed blood provided they are showered with a few coins.

In this regard, we want to strongly urge the Youths in the country to desist from engaging themselves in political violence and from making themselves available for use by politicians at all costs. As the country heads towards the general election on the 12th of August 2021, the Youths should instead work on aspiring for elective positions.

It is also important to remind the Youths that the consequences of breaking the law fall directly on them while politicians sleep peacefully in the comfort of their homes with their children.

We further call upon all stakeholders to inspire young people and challenge them to position themselves as front-liners in promoting peace and building national development. Violence has the potential to frustrate all the developmental strides the Country has attained in the past years.

For this reason, the issue of political violence should never be entertained as the country has already been hit with the heavy wave of COVID-19 which has drastically slowed down the economic wheels of the country.

We are living in critical times due to the impact of COVID-19 which has affected people from all sectors of life, and the Youths are not an exemption.

Therefore, instead of engaging in political violence, Youths should be innovative enough to create a favourable environment amidst the deadly pandemic which can enable them to be self-sustainable and reduce the BOMA IYANGANEPO syndrome. Times have changed and so should the minds of young people.

As a Church, we are disappointed to see our energetic young people repeatedly waste their precious energy and valuable time on illicit activities such as alcohol abuse and violent behaviour. This is the time young people should utilize national events like Youth Day to reflect on what they have done to enhance the development of the country.

In line with the theme, it is time for young people to take up the political, social, cultural and economic space of leadership in the nation for us to attain the much-needed development.

Remember your Creator while you are young, before the days of trouble come and the years when you say, “I find no pleasure in them.” (Ecclesiastes 12:1)
