Dear Church Leaders

RE: UPDATES AND GUIDELINES ON THE CHOLERA OUTBREAK

Fraternal greetings from CCZ.

Following our initial memo dated 31st December, 2017 and the engagement with the Ministry of Health as well as the increasing speculations regarding the cholera outbreak in the country, with Lusaka being the worst hit, we would like to give you an update and advise as follows:

  1. The cholera epicenters cannot be allowed to hold church programs on Sunday and any other day until further notice. The cholera epicenters have been identified as Kanyama and its clusters of extensions which include Garden house, Chibolya, Kanyama extension, Chawama, Kuku, John Laing, John Howard and Jack compounds. Others are Mandevu, Garden, Chaisa, Marapodi Misisi, Chipata, Mazyopa and Matero and its cluster of interlinked compounds.
  2. Church Services can be held in other areas outside these worst hit areas on Sunday as long the highest levels of hygiene are maintained. Every Church must have adequate and very clean toilets as well as enough clean water. Strictly urge all members to avoid handshakes, hugs, and communal foods.
  3. We encourage those in less affected areas to conduct very short worship services than the usual after which people are to be encouraged to go to their respective homes without idling and mingling around.
  4. We urge all Clergy and Lay Preachers to conduct contextual bible studies and preach contextual sermons that will help sensitize congregants to change their attitudes and mindsets regarding personal public hygiene and thus contribute to cholera prevention. Relevant resources will be shared through the social media and emails.
  5. We call on the CCZ fraternity to proactively and corporately participate in the general and personal cleanup program currently underway. It must be well noted that faith without works is dead. We must stand together with government, all political stakeholders to effectively contribute towards eliminating the cholera challenge and prevent it from becoming a national catastrophe.  We have a challenge to not only clean the city but the whole country at large. This prompts us to call on the entire CCZ fraternity to commit to participating in the immediate task of containing the cholera outbreak through personal corporate participation in the ongoing works.
  6. Encourage all the members to be vaccinated against cholera as and when the vaccination exercise commences.
  7. Let us all be good stewards of all resources and facilities that have been available in various residential areas to combat the cholera response challenge.
  8. Cholera is a poor sanitation and not demonic issue hence the best way to fight it is inculcating in each Christian and general Zambian citizenry a culture of cleanliness and good environmental management. God has set principles for welfare but because of selfishness, greed and indiscipline we have ignored the God given principles and found ourselves in a situation where nature has revolted and we are suffering the consequences. Our role as your Secretariat is to provide leadership and ownership in the spirit of the men of Issachar from the book of 1 Chronicles 12: 32 by understanding and knowing our times and responding accordingly. This statement does not imply that prayer has no power, it is rather a call to pray with wisdom and understanding so that we do not perish due to lack of knowledge of misapplied faith. We will be giving you periodic updates.

Kindly call or text me for additional guidance and updates.

With Love, Peace and Joy.

Yours in the Service of Christ

The Rev’d Canon Emmanuel Chikoya

GENERAL SECRETARY
