COUNCIL OF CHURCHES IN ZAMBIA (CCZ) former General Secretary Rev. Kingsley Mwenda has died in Mpika.
CCZ General Secretary Fr Emanuel Chikoya confirmed the death of Rev. Mwenda.
Father Chikoya said on Friday that Rev. Mwenda passed on earlier on Friday morning at Chilonga Mission Hospital after a short illness. He was aged 89.
In October this year, Fr Chikoya on behalf of CCZ donated a three wheel Honda, popularly known as Keke to Rev. Mwenda who, until his death on Friday morning, lived in Mpika’s Lavushimanda district, village Kapengwe of Chief Mpumba.
Fr Chikoya who was accompanied by CCZ Board Member Rev. Jane Nyirongo, Finance and Administration Officer Brian Mwanza and CCZ Chaplain Father James Phiri handed over the Honda to Rev. Mwenda.
And in handing over the Honda, Father Chikoya acknowledged the preliminary works that were done by CCZ immediate past General Secretary Rev. Suzanne Matale, saying his work was just to officially hand over the gift on behalf of the Council.
And Rev. Mwenda had thanked the CCZ for the gesture. He had expressed happiness over the donation and said he would then be able to go to church using the Honda.
He said his heart longed to continue attending church services but due to old age it was very difficult for him to cover the distance to church.
Rev. Kingsley Mwenda served as CCZ General Secretary from 1972 to 1983. During his tenure he managed to build Church House along Cairo road in Lusaka for the CCZ.
Rev. Mwenda is also the only General Secretary honoured by CCZ by naming one of its properties after him – the Kingsley Mwenda Centre in Makeni.
